As some of you may know, the recent BBC incarnation of Sherlock Holmes has handily re-ignited my nearly life-long love of the character. And, being the person that I am, I have kept an eye on a few fanfiction sites (mostly AO3) to see what fandom hath wrought in the area of transformative works.
I've read/skimmed extensively, and my tastes in this fandom surprise me. I've mentioned more than once that the slash potential for Sherlock Holmes in general and this series in particular is exceedingly high. There is a lot of Sherlock/John out there, and since the core cast is all male and mostly attractive, the permutations on this theme are all accounted for (Sherlock/Lestrade, Sherlock/Mycroft, Mycroft/Lestrade (sometimes referred to as "Mystrade" and clearly the second most popular slash paring) John/Everybody, Sherlock as furry -- plus dozens of other types of stories (het, femslash, genderswap stories (both sexual and non-sexual), asexuality (ace), casefic, general fic of all types, really, and some I hadn't thought existed). As a novelty-seeking type, I find this awesome, even when it's kind of bad. (A Criminal Minds crossover Sherlock/Spencer? REALLY? Really. They're practically the same person. Not that there's anything wrong with that.)
( My favorite stories in this fandom are Case!fic and Ace!fic, but I go on a bit about how much stuff is out there, and how the more different it is the better I seem to like it, given a minimum level of writing proficiency. )
( Why I think ace!Sherlock is closest to canon, and what that has made me start to consider about the gender binary and the value of sex in a relationship )
( Why I like case!fic stories, and how they can be taken in too many different directions to name, and why it often dances on my happy button. )
But this week, I read one that blew the top off my head, for several reasons.
I'll tell you all about them in the next post.
