My Beloved indulged me by taking me to see Sweeney Todd. I know it has been out forever, but I have not had a lot of time or money for stuff like that lately.
I've never seen it performed, so this was my first exposure to anything other than the bare bones of the story.
I have to say that I am genetically predisposed to love this movie. Tim Burton films have a look, and it either annoys the hell out of you or it doesn't. *shrug* Johnny Depp... I don't know what it is about the man, but whatever it is that he's got, I want some of it.
Neither of the leads are great singers, and that's fine. Tim Burton seemed set on showering us with as much blood as possible. With people singing about it. So either it makes you very uncomfortable (as it did my Beloved) or you find yourself laughing heartily (yeah, that would be me).
I couldn't help it. I loved it. I can say, though, that it wasn't a really great movie. Everyone was wonderful and the story was right up my alley, because I love revenge fantasies in general. I also love Tim Burton movies in general.
So I came home giggling, humming to myself and posing outrageously with imaginary razors. I think I really must find a performance of the actual musical, with people who can actually sing better than me in the roles. (Okay, I admit Depp and Carter both sing better than I do-- I took two years of voice lessons just so I could sing a lullaby without making babies cry, and it's still a near thing.)
But I lurved it all the same.
Also, as my friend Sara said recently, "In an attic somewhere, there's a painting of Johnny Depp that's looking reeeeeally rough." I love my friends.

In other news, our water heater exploded/fell apart. Won't know until tomorrow if the wood floors will be okay. Some of the planks did swell a bit, though we had three adults armed with every towel in the house and a shop vac. My father-in-law is helping them install the new one now. I'm glad it happened before my lover went to Africa.

I've heard a couple Sweeney Todd songs done by Angela Lansbury. Don't know if I saw a filmed stage production or just heard the music. I do remember being very weirded out by it, though, and that's part of why I have yet to see the Depp version.
Crossing fingers for good news on the water damage issue.

I think Burton has more to do with the weirding out potential of this movie than Depp does. I could just see him having people off camera spray Depp with blood and giggle about it. Timm Burton is an odd duck. I get him, I think, but he's not everyone's cuppa.
I'm hoping the boards dry out okay. They have before, after the hall bathroom had an issue. We'll just have to see.

Depp is really a very versatile actor. It's seems he's made a career of choosing mostly roles that do extreme things to his "look."
