So, last night my Beloved and I went to Liberation through Education's "A Night for the Kids" -- their first annual silent auction/gala charity event.

Now, the charity's founder had won my Beloved over when she came in to his office asking for sponsorship or donation of services to the cause. He argued for the company to support it and paid for the donated printing himself when he failed to convince the other execs.

So, anyway. There was a Patron's dinner first, which we simply could not attend due to time constraints. We paid the boys to baby sit each other, and threatened them with non-payment should either of them act up. It seemed to work well.

In any case, I was nervous about not knowing anyone and worried about what to wear and all that. As it turns out, I'm sure I looked acceptable and once I got to talking to people it was easy. I met the other saleslady from the company, a transplant from Arizona. My darling had said I would like her, and he was right. She's like a cross between Aunt Mame and a hippy chick. :) She started a book club when she moved here two years ago, and it meets at the library that's maybe ten blocks away from where we live. This is SOME book club, sounds like. They bring food and drink, have local authors in to speak and generally have a blast.

One thing I noticed, though, was what a small town New Orleans feels like. These social circles are fairly small, and everybody knows everybody, or at least they know people who know each other.

I think, somewhere during the evening, the saleslady volunteered me for a committee. The founder was talking about how this was the first event they'd ever tried to organize on this scale, but that it was such a success they would have to do it again, and the chatty saleslady, M, said, "Form a committee." She grabbed my shoulder. "Put her on it." The founder smiled at me said, "You're on a committee!" So it was a joking sort of thing, but I told her that I make a better Indian than I do a Chief, and would be quite willing to serve in any capacity where I could be useful.

Thing is, literacy and education have always been areas I've volunteered in, and I believe in what they're doing. I'd really love to volunteer, provided my other responsibilities and commitments allow for it.

Oh! We bid on "$2,000 worth of orthodontics" and won it for an insultingly low bid (which was pretty much all we could do at the mo--I do not mean to do what my grandmother would call "poor mouthing" but we are strapped, and will be eating of the ramen until our house sells). This is very good, because Big Boy has teeth coming in that we can't even tell where they are supposed to be, and we have no dental insurance (which wouldn't cover orthodontics anyway). We have a healthcare savings account which we use to pay for dental stuff and glasses, which is handy, but the braces can be very, very pricey.
