Got to see my sweet little nieces, up from Florida with my Beloved's middle brother and his charming wife, B. She's a librarian, and reads a lot, so I always get cool book recs from her. She's not a lit snob, and likes a variety of books -- we have some significant overlap in our tastes, which is nice. We both like Gabaldon, though she goes for the Outlander series more than the Lord John Mysteries. (Me, I enjoyed the first couple Outlander books after about 150 pages, but the mysteries are more fun for me, now. Haven't even bothered with the latest outlander thing yet. The love is gone.)

But, she really dug the Twilight books. I haven't read them, but considering what most of you have said about them, I was a tad surprised. She likes Vampire stories more than I do, but doesn't go in for mysteries or thrillers much.I'm not mystery or thriller genre buff, per se, but I do love stories with those elements.

Anyway, she recommended Jasper Fforde, and proffered some early Laurell K. Hamilton with just the right blend of praise and embarrassment about what her novels later became. Hee! Plus, she sometimes supplies me with books, and definitely knows what's fun. So we had a great talk.

It was a fun day, if still very rainy and unseasonably warm.

Today is my hot cousin's birthday. Well, most of my cousins are hot, in one way or another, but the cousin of which I speak was the one I was closest to growing up. He was chubby most of that time but got very lean in his teens, and would have been a stud muffin if he wasn't so very shy. Maybe I'll get to wish him a happy birthday when we go up next week. He's been on my mind lately, a single dad just sort of getting by, keeping his head down. I hope he's happy.

The writing is going well enough. I may finish the draft with the year!

Glad to hear that things are going well. LOL on the hot cousin.

As for the Twilight books, I guess you just have to be there. My kid said they were much worse than the movie, lots of angst and drama and introspection. **shrugs**

Well, my SIL wants to see the movie again, and I agreed to go with her. So I guess I'll find out soon enough. ;)

I'm among the few who do not proffer embarrassment about LKH's books. Yeah, they are FULL of SEXX000ring, yeah. But her books, fundamentally, are about the human journey toward self-awareness and self-acceptance, and about the transformative power of unconditional love. I like 'em a lot. And since I'm a grownup, I get to enjoy the sex scenes too.

I don't object to the wacky sex. I mean, I write erotica myself. And I do enjoy a story with the sex left in. However, when I find myself bored with the sex, wondering when the hell the story is going to make an appearance again, then it is something to be embarrassed about. When you can tell that the plot is working up to an excuse for Anita Blake to boink the two hot guys who only entered the story a page before they get nekkid, because if she doesn't have sex with them right now everybody DIES!!!

That's just exhausting, and kind of boring and predictable. I admit, I like that her female characters aren't subby, and I like the BDSM flavor of most of it. I liked, probably the first ten or so Anita Blake books and the first couple Merry Gentry ones. It's just when the plot becomes an excuse for a sex scene it loses my interest. But maybe that's just me.

It just occurred to me how bad that may have sounded. I enjoyed most of her books but the last one I read was kind of a slog for me, as well as a revelation (along the lines of, wow, even threesomes get boring after a while! Who'd a thunk it!). I have nothing against her work, just that the last one I read didn't leave me wanting more.
