So, you guys may remember my post about [livejournal.com profile] hominysnark and her need for surgery (and lack of both health insurance, and the $2700.00 up-front surgeon's fee).

Well, people were very awesome and generous and donated money and auctioned cool things (some auctions are still pending, even) and the money was raised! As it turns out, both the hospital and the anesthesiologist wanted up-front fees, too, which the fund-raisers also helped her swing. There will still be some $30,000.00 in medical bills after the fact, but she'll recover and be able to keep doing what she does for a living, which at least improves her chances of being able to pay it. (Had she waited, she would have run the risk of permanent damage to her health, so this a big deal, right here.)

The point is, WE DID IT. She can get the surgery now. It's scheduled for Thursday morning!. (Rest assured that any additional proceeds from auctions and donations will not get blown on bon-bons and high livin' -- as I mentioned, there are still HUGE medical debts looming.) But at least she doesn't have to lie gasping at death's door before they can do this for her.

Relief is in sight!

YOU did it. You guys who donated and boosted the signal and auctioned stuff -- YOU made this possible. She has been overwhelmed with your generosity and is incredibly grateful. You guys ROCK.

I don't usually get all that political, but if you'd like to do something to change the sucktackular health care system that makes fundraisers like [livejournal.com profile] fluffybunnyfund necessary, please call your Senators and Representatives, email them, send them letters. There has GOT to be a better way to do this health care thing, is all I'm saying.

Today at GC, I posted about a nifty gadget that has great potential to change people's lives for the better all over the world, in Seeing is Better Than Believing.

Recent events have inspired me, shown me how cool people are, how willing they are to help when someone is in need.

It also kind of showed me that trying is sooo much better than not trying, even when you feel the odds are stacked against you. I thought maybe we could get enough to help cover the surgeon's fee, but to cover it and help with the other up-front costs she didn't know about at the time? Never in my wildest dreams. I just...

Okay, I got mad, is what happened. Mad enough to try.

So. I'm going to keep trying, even when I'm not motivated by anger and frustration. I'm going to try at things that aren't that important. I'm going to keep trying, because, gosh darn it, trying works a lot better than not trying.

So there is my motto, and Yoda be damned. ;) I'm gonna TRY.

To that end, here are my word count stats for the day:

It was really coming today. I even got to stop in a place where i knew what was coming next, which is always good. (Reason for stopping - school day started.)

I'm giving you tomorrow's post tonight. I even did my writing for tomorrow tonight, so that if I end up out until the wee hours, I won't be obliged to attempt my daily 750 words when I get home. ;)

So, today for GC, I have written an article about TED Talks called, I'm in Love with TED. I really am in love with TED, and I shared a few of the TED Talks that have meant something to me. But there are so many more. I hope people take some time to explore the TED site, even though I had to use YouTube for most of the videos because the embed codes from the TED site didn't work with Joomla. (I think, if Joomla were a person, he would be in grave danger of a kick in his hypothetical 'nads.)

In writing news, I've finished the next bit of HMOWK, but am once again in need of beta help. Let me know if you're willing to give it a look. This one's a bit racy.

Now for the obligatory widgets. The words that will have to count for February 16th:

It was really coming tonight, and once again I managed to stop before I ran out of things to say, so starting it up again should be easier than otherwise.

That brings the overall total to:
